Pillar I
Pillar I: The Studio
Consulting & interior design for children's spaces — because every child deserves a room that invites them to grow, learn, and dream.
FFC Fischer Fritz is building a consulting and design studio devoted entirely to designing spaces for children. We treat a room as a child's "third teacher" — after their parents and their teachers. The colours on the walls, the textures of the fabrics, the quality of the light, and the arrangement of the furniture send a quiet but powerful message: you matter. You are safe. You are worth being surrounded by beauty.
Our design philosophy draws on developmental psychology, trauma-informed design, and the principles of universal design. We create spaces that are not only aesthetically considered but psychologically nourishing.
Design services for families in crisis
We don't simply decorate; we create places of refuge.
The challenge
In the US and the EU, millions of children grow up in housing that is unstable, overcrowded, or visually chaotic. A child with no space of their own — no quiet corner to read in, no ordered place to play, no bed that truly feels like theirs — carries higher stress, weaker school performance, and a diminished sense of self-worth.
Our answer
We offer pro bono and heavily subsidised design services for children's rooms in low-income households, transitional housing, foster families, and women's shelters.
What that looks like in practice
Needs assessment
We talk with families, social workers, and carers to understand the child's specific needs: age, interests, sensory sensitivities, and history.
Collaborative design
We bring the child into the process. Giving them authority over their own space is an act of empowerment. We ask about favourite colours, dreams, and heroes. We listen.
Trauma-informed spaces
For children who have experienced instability, we build in elements that foster a sense of safety: soft light, calming colour palettes, cosy retreats, and predictable systems of order.
Sensory design
For children on the autism spectrum or with sensory processing differences, we choose textures, acoustics, and visual stimuli that calm rather than overwhelm.
High-quality materials
We use durable, non-toxic, sustainable materials that stand up to everyday life with children while staying safe and beautiful.
The impact
A child who once slept on a mattress on the floor now sleeps in a bed of their own. A child who had to do homework at the kitchen table now has their own desk. A child who felt invisible now feels seen.
Design services for kindergartens & schools
Learning environments that invite wonder, creativity, and academic success.
The challenge
In disadvantaged neighbourhoods — in industrialised countries and the Global South alike — educational facilities are often functional at best and unsafe at worst. Bare concrete walls, flickering fluorescent light, broken furniture, and an absence of warmth smother curiosity and get in the way of learning.
Our answer
We offer specialised consulting for the design of kindergartens and schools. We work with education providers, NGOs, and municipalities to turn learning environments into spaces that invite wonder, creativity, and academic success.
The solidarity principle — our business model
While our work for families in need is free or heavily subsidised, we work at market rates for private clients and private institutions.
Every commercial contract signed in our studio directly funds our ability to offer the same services free of charge to those who need them most.
When a family commissions an exceptional children's room from us, they are simultaneously funding a dignified room for a child in transitional housing. When a private school hires us for a redesign, they are supporting the construction of a kindergarten in a developing country.
